Lathom Park, Lancashire: Real War Horses

The route for our 3.9314 miles (6.327 km) Sunday Meander has been saved and is available at...
Our walk today started outside Lathom Park, the majestic house long gone.

The number of horses we saw, on our meander, shouldn't be a surprise as, during the war, thousands of horses – and men - were trained at Lathom Park near Ormskirk
Lord Lathom had offered his land so the horses could be prepared for their duties at the front line.
You can find out more about the "Real War Horses" at Lathom Park at...
You can see some of the things we saw...

  • Thistle Down
  • Horses
  • Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera)
  • Sheep
  • Ponds
  • Woods and more

All in all, a nice day, an enjoyable walk and one I'm sure we'll do again; perhaps with some variations.

Thomas Rigby's - for our 29th Walk and Wednesday Pub Lunch

Today's 2.7299 miles (4.3934 km) route, from Sandhills Station via Thomas Rigby's for Lunch, then on to Moorfields Station, has been saved and can be seen at...
You can see what the "Pub Lunch" experience was like at...

Let's just say, with a score of 9 out of 10 for the Beers on offer and Service provided, it's =2nd in the that League
Our walk started at Sandhills Station and took us along the Leeds Liverpool Canal...
...where we saw honeysuckle (Lonicera) flowers...

 ...and Canada Geese (Branta canadensis)...
We passed under a number of iron bridges, following a narrow boat as it headed towards the locks...
The warehouses on the skyline are slowly being converted into hotels, flats etc.,
Our thoughts turned to wine making as we saw the ripening elder berries (Sambucus)...
At the bottom of the flight of locks...
...we noted the Hazel (Corylus) nuts.
We left the canal and walked along the docks. Large areas have been cleared but the clock, mentioned on the Mersey Ferry trips, still stands proud...
Finally we turned inland to have lunch at Thomas Rigby's.

It did rain as we headed towards our pub lunch but, we avoided getting too wet. During lunch it rained quite hard...

After lunch we returned home via Moorfields Station.
Another enjoyable walk, albeit quite short, and pub lunch.
