W&WPL #9 The Sandpiper, Bickerstaffe

Today's 6.4086 miles (10.3136 km) route has been saved and can be viewed at...

The Wednesday Pub Lunch element can be viewed at... http://maghullfoodie.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/the-sandpiper-bickerstaffe.html

Leaving from the car park behind Costa in Maghull we headed out onto the A59 and headed towards Ormskirk
We crossed the A59 and headed along Dodds Lane bearing left at Northway School.
Turning right into Brock Avenue, we crossed the small park, on the footpath, turning left on Ribble Avenue and right onto Lowther Avenue.
Then it was left onto Wasdale Avenue and right onto Park Lane.
We continued to the T-junction where we turned left up to the M58 roundabout.
After the slip-road up from the M58 we descended down onto the old, now disused road and on to the A506, (Prescot Road) where we turned left.
Note: for those who wish to avoid this part continue along the road towards Kirby taking the first left onto the A506.
Follow the footpath sign across the car park, of what was The Hen & Chickens pub / now closed Indian Restaurant.
When we did this Meander, there was a skip on the far side of the car park where lots of stuffed toys had been placed in surrounding trees and bushes...

...a real eye-sore!
On the far side of the car-park pass we went through the gap into a field keeping the hedge on our right.
We continued along this path...

...ignoring the turn to the right, past a field of heavily pregnant sheep and through Cunscough Hall's yard.
Just after the the Hall,  we took a right turn continuing along the clear path until we reached a "cross-path".
Turning left, and keeping the hedge/ditch on our left, we skirted a coppice and crossed a foot-bridge.
Once we'd crossed the bridge we went slightly to the right and continued with the hedge on our left.
The took us to steps up onto Simonswood Lane.
Here we turned right then left along Back Lane
Just around the first bend we took the path to the left, picking our way through old, engines, vehicles, wood and more.
We walked along the edge of the field, with Bickerstaffe Brook on our left, until we reached Mercer's Lane, where we turned right.
Look out for the Footpath sigh before you reach the farm.
Turn left and with the ditch on our right we went around the farm and then continued along a clear track/path.

Ignoring the track to the right, leading to another farm, with lots of horses.
It was nice to see burrs in the hedgerows...

Eventually after passing a wood with many snowdrops...

...we reached Hall Lane where we turned left and followed the road past the church on the right.
Just after the church there is a footpath sign where you turn right and continue straight ahead, ignoring the next path to the right, until you reach the foot-bridge over the M58...

...cross the bridge and continue with the M58 on your right. in a very shot distance, turn left and follow the path out onto Ormskirk Road (A570) where you turn left.
The Sandpiper is on the left, a little way up the road...

After we had lunch at The Sandpiper, we went a little further up the road to the Bus Stop where we caught the 319 Bus to Ormskirk...
View of pub from bus stop
...and then the 310 Bus back to Maghull.
