Sefton’s Natural Coast

Chris and I have walked the Sefton Coastal path and revisited many sections we like.

Today it was about walking in the sun along the beach and back through the unique dunes and forest environment.

6.3084 miles in total, you can view the route taken at...

For those of you who haven't walked the coastal path it starts from the northern outskirts of Liverpool and passes through dunes, marshes and the towns of Southport and Crosby. It also passes the Ainsdale Nature and Formby National Trust Reserves.

Sefton’s Natural Coast, as it is now known, is the largest undeveloped dune system in England, extending from Southport and the Ribble Estuary to Seaforth at the mouth of the River Mersey.

Today we started and ended at Formby National Trust Reserve
Making our way from the car park, just past where non-members pay their £5 to park, we headed through pine woodlands towards the beach.

At one of the turns Chris played the wooden chimes...

we both completed a "balance path", looked at a woodpecker carving...

and peered through a "mounted magnifying glass" at some bracken fronds.

Arriving at the beach, after climbing over the dunes...

...we were drawn to the shore.

For once we didn't have our "Who can find the longest razor shell?" competition but, in places, you couldn't avoid them. There must be another use for them.

After 3 miles we cut up through the dunes and on to a number of different coloured path routes; from memory we walked part of the red, blue, black, white, purple, and the Coastal path routes.Through coastal marshes, pine woodlands, heathery heathland and in, out and over dunes.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable walk in the sunshine. Even if you don't replicate the walk, it's an area you should visit if you are in the area.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention, on a clear day, there views across the Irish Sea to North Wales, Snowdonia and the Lake District; along with wind farms, gas rigs and more.

RSPB Marshside

A nice walk, near the seaside around the RSPB Marshside Reserve at Southport.
The URL for this 4.6331 mile route is http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5971866.

Father's day and this was an ideal opportunity to try out my new monocular, a present from my son Ben; and of course letting Chris take a look as well.
Flag Iris
We didn't need magnification to view the flowers but a close-up of Avocets (with chick in one case) was pure joy.
Avocet
To think, at one time, they were seldom seen apart from the North Norfolk Coast. We saw 5 in total.
Through the Golf course
As you can see, we were blessed with a sunny day and, although we initially took the lower path through the Golf course, when the opportunity occurred, we moved to the higher path; here there was a pleasant breeze.
Keep an eye out for the Alpaca  (Vicugna pacos) which was introduced to ward off foxes etc. from the nesting birds. No I'm not joking!
Cattle - view towards River Ribble
Apart from plants, birds and an Alpaca you will see the cattle that maintain the reserve, making it ideal for nesting, and you may, if quiet, see Water Voles along the path through the golf course.

Southport Show and Maps

We decided today that the weather was too unpredictable and we would be better off visiting "The show"! It hasn't been something we had considered doing since moving here in 1989 but it was an interesting experience. The theme was "music" and some of the exhibitors had been very imaginative. Displays included an Octopus's garden (seen above), Lucy in the Sky..., Strawberry Fields, Abbey Road etc. I particularly liked the displays of ferns and grasses as well as the Bonsai (again one included in the image above).
Rather than putting each photograph in separately I decided to do two collages; I hope this gives a feeling of the exhibits I liked and the range of things on view.

As you can see above there were other things to view than plants and fruit and vegetables. I've included one bird of prey especially for Madeline and Ben. Chris purchased a new bag (black leather) and as the weather deteriorated we headed back home so that I could watch the clash between Liverpool and Chelsea. A 1-1 draw.
Maps: - It seems as if some people like looking at the maps of our walks so I've added the two I've missed...
